Blackout Night evokes a taste of war-time Britain

Blackout Night 1Things are going to look a bit different in the pub tomorrow!  When night falls we’ll be switching off the lights and plunging the pub into darkness to bring a taste of what it was like to live through war-time Britain.

From 6pm onwards tomorrow we’ll be holding our first ever Blackout Night, marking Remembrance Day as well as raising money for The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

PoppyThe pub will be blacked out and the only source of light will be candle light. And to complete the experience, the chefs will be serving up a special menu of war-time themed dishes washed down with glasses of locally brewed beer.

Join us tomorrow and take a real trip down memory lane.  Tuck into classic spam fritters, hearty veggie stew and dumplings, warming bangers and mash and sweet apple crumble for supper and a glass or two of Heritage ale from Firebird, from a specially designed pump clip on the bar.

Richard Onslow Nov 2015 1We’ll buy a drink for any past or present service men or women who pop in tomorrow evening and for every plate of bangers and mash and apple crumble we sell on the night, we’ll also make a donation to The Royal British Legion in Cranleigh.  We’ll also be selling poppies.

This fab night was the brainchild of Terri who was keen to do something to mark the centenary of the First World War years and raise money for good local causes at the same time.  A hundred and one years ago the country was really in the thick of it of course.  Ordinary families were living under extraordinary circumstances, with food rationing and the nightly occurrence of blackout to prevent even the smallest glimmer of light bringing down an enemy bomb.

Richard Onslow Blackout Night Nov 2015 featureWe’ll be trying to recreate a little taste of what that was like, by throwing the pub into darkness and making authentic dishes that would have graced war-time tables.  It’s really going to be an evening with a difference, so come along for a tipple or two and some hearty fare while you rally round the cause.
